Chapter Ten: Giggling for God

Chapter Ten: Giggling for God

Bell offers a number of examples of humour from the stories about Jesus, and looks at the challenges of language and culture in the shared understanding of jokes and humour. He concludes the chapter—and the book—by encouraging us to ask why and where we might be able to find humour in both the Bible and Jesus.

  1. Did  you find yourself laughing at any of the examples of humour in the Bible that Bell offers?  What else has struck you as funny in your own reading of the Bible?

  2. Have you had experiences of humour being missed across a cultural difference? How do those experiences help you to make sense of the challenge of seeing the humour in the gospels?

  3. How did this chapter change your perspective of Jesus and humour?

  4. Why do you think humour would be important to the stories of Jesus and of how God acts? How might we make more room for humour in the sharing of our faith and in our liturgies?
